Quake jolts Japan’s northeastern coast

A strong earthquake hit the already devastated north-east coast of Japan, knocking out electricity in the area where Tokyo Electric is still trying to stabilise the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station.

The earthquake, classified a 7.1 magnitude tremor by the US Geological Survey, hit the country late on Thursday night and triggered a brief tsunami warning. It was a sober reminder of the much larger March 11 quake and tsunami, which killed as many as 27,000 people.

Wall Street fell sharply on news of the quake, but quickly recovered. The reflexive sell-off was heaviest in the energy, industrial and material sectors.
