‘Battle against time’ at damaged plant

Naoto Kan, Japan’s prime minister, said on Friday the situation at the Fukushima nuclear plant was “very grave”, as emergency workers fought through the night to bring the crisis under control.

Engineers were attempting to restore power to cooling pumps that failed following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, as weather forecasts suggested the wind could shift over the next few days, carrying radiation towards Tokyo.

Concern over the past 48 hours has switched from the reactors themselves to the need to refill water storage tanks containing overheating radioactive uranium.
