Once silent middle class plays key role

Karim Mohammed had never voted or been on a protest as he focused his efforts on developing his real estate business.

But on January 25 as tens of thousands of people marched through Cairo calling for Hosni Mubarak to step down, he felt compelled to take to the streets with two friends – an investment banker and a marketing director.

For the first time in his life, the 37-year-old believed he could have an impact on Egypt’s future. He became one of a previously silent liberal middle class that played a crucial role in the unprecedented uprising against the regime.
