The ancient Chinese game of Go requires analytical skills and intuition, and the aim is to enclose territories on the board.
Eisai, Japan's fourth-largest pharmaceutical company, has taken a similar strategy in its approach to the Chinese market, says Pelham Smithers, an independent equities analyst.
“Players of the game Go would recognise Eisai's approach,” says Mr Smithers. “It targets an area, then with a handful of well-placed moves envelops it.”
