CHINA AND TAIWAN SIGN LANDMARK DEAL

China and Taiwan yesterday signed a landmark trade deal that marks the biggest improvement in cross-strait relations in more than 50 years.

The Economic Co-operation Framework Agreement is the centrepiece of efforts by Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwanese president, to mend relations with China, which suffered under the eight-year rule of Chen Shui-bian, the former pro-independence Taiwanese leader.

Taiwan hopes the deal will smooth the path towards signing free trade agreements with other countries in an effort to ensure that its export- oriented economy is not marginalised as trade deals flourish across Asia.
