Germany and France will today try to rally support from other eurozone members for a rescue plan for debt-laden Greece, possibly involving a commitment to issue loans or buy Greek sovereign bonds.
President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel were last night trying to piece together an agreement with Greece that would persuade eurozone countries to join a bail-out.
Officials in Paris said they were working on “assurances the Greek government would undertake the measures necessary” to cut its deficit by 4 percentage points a year by 2012.
