US RETAILERS BEAT EXPECTATIONS

US shoppers braved pre- Christmas blizzards and continuing economic uncertainties to deliver stronger-than-expected December sales for leading retailers.

Retail Metrics said its monthly index of comparable store sales rose 3 per cent in December, which represents the strongest increase in the index since April 2008.

The improvement came after a disappointing rise of 0.8 per cent in November and compared with a 3.5 per cent fall in December 2008.
