Fresh questions have been raised about the succession process in the Communist Party of China after Xi Jinping, vice-president and heir apparent to Hu Jintao, president, was apparently denied an expected promotion to the commission that runs the country's military.
Mr Xi's appointment had been widely predicted during last week's annual meeting of the ruling party's central committee, which ended on Friday.
However, there was no announcement of his winning the post of vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission.
