North Korea said on Friday that it was in the final stage of enriching uranium, a process that would give it a second path to making a nuclear weapon.
The US has long suspected the North has a secret programme to enrich uranium for possible use in nuclear weapons – but officials add that they have little idea of how extensive it is. Many experts maintain that Pyongyang has not developed anything near a full-scale enrichment programme.
The North has already tested two plutonium-based nuclear devices, with the most recent test in May leading to tightened international sanctions against the reclusive state.
