Official letters released yesterday demonstrate the extent to which the UK government changed its position on the possible freeing of the Lockerbie bomber following pressure from Libya.
Jack Straw, the justice secretary, initially agreed in September 2007 with the Scottish government that Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi should be excluded from a prisoner transfer agreement with Libya, the released documents show.
Mr Megrahi was jailed in Scotland following his conviction for murdering 270 people in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am aircraft that exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.
