Chinese authorities in Xinjiang vowed yesterday to execute people involved in killings during protests in the north-western region, as Hu Jintao, the president, cut short his stay at the Group of Eight summit in Italy to rush home to take charge of the crisis.
Army and security forces flooded Urumqi, the Xinjiang capital, in an effort to lock down the city and prevent further violence after the intervention of Han Chinese vigilante gangs on Tuesday seeking revenge on the indigenous Muslim Uighur population.
Tanks, armoured vehicles, trucks loaded with soldiers and police cars patrolled roads and broadcast appeals to residents not to linger outside, and to strive for peace and unity.
