Pakistan blames ‘foreign hand' for attack

The attack by a well-organised group of gunmen armed with rifles, grenades and rocket launchers came as the team travelled by bus to the city's Gaddafi cricket stadium to resume a Test match.

Five policemen were killed and seven members of the Sri Lankan squad injured in one of the worst attacks on international sport since the 1972 killing of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics.

After an exchange of fire with Pakistani security forces, the gunmen escaped and remained at large last night. No one had claimed responsibility for the attack by last night. The Sri Lankan military said it did not believe the Tamil Tigers, the island's separatist rebel movement, were involved.
