BERNANKE CALMS FEARS ON BANKING INTERVENTION

The comments by the US Federal Reserve chairman provided the clearest signal yet that US authorities believe the stress tests will not lead to the full nationalisation of a big bank.

“We are committed to ensuring the viability of all the major financial institutions,” Mr Bernanke said, as he presented the Federal Reserve's twice-annual Monetary Report to Congress. “Fortunately it (this issue) doesn't come up.”

Mr Bernanke said “none of the major institutions are subject at this point” to the kind of regulatory intervention used to address banks on the brinks of failure.
