As the candidates debated the economy, Mr McCain defended his $52bn plan to help voters in the present financial crisis and said he was disappointed the Treasury had not made it the first priority to help homeowners faced with foreclosure.
“Americans are hurting and they are angry,” he asserted, saying voters were “victims of greed and excess on Wall Street and Washington DC.”
Mr Obama said he agreed about the change to help the middle class but differed on the strategy. “What we haven't yet seen is a rescue package for the middle class.”
