China's tainted milk powder scandal escalated dramatically yesterday as 22 Chinese dairy companies were found to have produced infant formula containing a chemical blamed for killing two infants, state television reported.
The Chinese government, eager to contain the damage to its image for product safety caused by the scandal, has launched an investigation that involves testing baby milk powder throughout the country. The state-run television report said sales of the suspect products had been halted.
More than 1,200 infants are thought to have been made ill by infant formula that has been linked to kidney stone problems.
