For many devotees of Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spin-off has long proven itself to be an equal to its parent show, if not a more rewarding watch. As a prequel series, Better Call Saul finds itself liberated from the expectation of a grandstand finale (how Game of Thrones crumbled). We already know which characters make it into the future, and which will likely have their story resolved definitively in the coming episodes.
Still, the question of what ultimately happens to Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman (or Jimmy McGill, to use his real name) is up in the air. Until now, the opening scene of each series has flashed forward to give a tantalising glimpse of his new life as Gene Takovic — the alter ego that Saul adopts after he flees Albuquerque following the events of Breaking Bad. But in this new series, the jump-in-time intro sequence offers us something a little more enigmatic: a beautifully choreographed tour through Saul’s gaudy home as his belongings are itemised and repossessed.
Back in the show’s present, things pick up in the wake of the bloody finale, when cartel boss Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) took out the entire team of assassins sent to kill him in Mexico by rival drug-kingpin Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Realising there’s no better place to hide than the grave, he decides to let everyone believe the hit was a success as he plots his next move.
