UK apprentices will not need maths or English qualifications

New rules aim to plug skills gaps in key industries and drive economic growth

Companies will be able to hire apprentices who do not have maths and English qualifications under new rules intended to bolster Britain’s domestic workforce and drive economic growth.

New short-term apprenticeships that last for eight months — down from the current minimum of 12 months — will also be launched as ministers try to plug gaps in key sectors such as green energy, healthcare and the film industry.

Allowing employers to ignore a previous requirement for apprentices over the age of 19 to have GCSE-equivalent English and maths may allow up to 10,000 more people to enter the workforce each year, ministers estimate.
