Companies will be able to hire apprentices who do not have maths and English qualifications under new rules intended to bolster Britain’s domestic workforce and drive economic growth.
New short-term apprenticeships that last for eight months — down from the current minimum of 12 months — will also be launched as ministers try to plug gaps in key sectors such as green energy, healthcare and the film industry.
Allowing employers to ignore a previous requirement for apprentices over the age of 19 to have GCSE-equivalent English and maths may allow up to 10,000 more people to enter the workforce each year, ministers estimate.
