The UK government’s appointments watchdog has written to Boris Johnson to clarify his relationship with a London-based hedge fund whose founder arranged for him to meet Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro.
The former UK prime minister’s visit to the South American nation last month and his 45-minute meeting with Maduro have caused controversy because of the strained relationship between Venezuela and the west.
Former JPMorgan banker Maarten Petermann, who co-founded London-based investment firm Merlyn Advisors, set up the trip, the Financial Times reported last week.
