EU leaders should not favour Ukraine over the western Balkans when deciding whether to open accession negotiations next month, Austria’s foreign minister has said.
Alexander Schallenberg told the Financial Times it was essential to anchor Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the EU’s orbit to counter Russian influence. Reinforcing stability in both regions — eastern and south-eastern Europe — was equally important.
“Our geostrategic seismograph is kicking out in both directions,” he added.
