Israel has lodged a formal complaint with Germany after Berlin’s ambassador attended a court hearing on the controversial judicial overhaul being pushed by Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government.
The Israeli government’s judicial changes have tipped the country into the biggest domestic political crisis in its history, igniting eight months of mass protests, unsettling investors and attracting criticism from important allies such as the US.
The first of the changes, which limits the Supreme Court’s ability to block government decisions, was passed in July. It was immediately challenged by opposition and civil society groups, and the Supreme Court held its first hearing on the appeals last week.
