SNP admits it has 30,000 fewer members than claimed

Ruling party issues correction after contenders to succeed Sturgeon raise poll concerns

Scotland’s governing Scottish National party admitted on Thursday it had 30,000 fewer members than it claimed at the beginning of its increasingly contentious campaign to elect a leader to succeed Nicola Sturgeon.

Bowing to calls from all three leadership candidates for transparency around the membership, the party said 72,186 people were eligible to help decide who will be Scotland’s next first minister and flag-bearer of the stalled campaign for Scottish independence.
