Advice to shell-shocked Americans from Brexit Britain

Britons are skilled at navigating the humiliation unleashed by political and market chaos — allow us to give you some tips

Markets-savvy Americans are developing a very familiar thousand-yard stare. 

Those who voted for Kamala Harris to be their president, and even some who voted for Donald Trump, are surveying the crumbling edifice of their once-mighty financial markets, grappling with the ups and downs of the president’s slapstick trade policy, with a mixture of horror, confusion and bafflement.

Foreigners are gleefully clapping them on the back and saying “ha ha ha, what the hell are you lot up to, eh?” and, unusually for Americans, they don’t know what to say. “What’s the deal with the tariffs on the penguins? And all those U-turns? Ha ha.” Silence.
