US Treasury team set for Beijing talks on economic co-operation

Visit is latest sign of easing tensions between the countries after Biden-Xi summit last year

A working group of US Treasury and Chinese officials will meet this week in Beijing for the first time, in another sign of closer engagement between the countries following November’s summit between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

The two sides will meet in the Chinese capital on Thursday, according to a Treasury official. The group has met twice since its creation last September following Treasury secretary Janet Yellen’s first visit to China.

The official said they would discuss topics ranging from financial stability and cross-border data regulations to capital markets, sustainable finance and anti-money laundering. They will also talk about countering the financing of terrorism, including talks on counter-narcotics co-operation, and their views on IMF policies.
