Survivors of Haiti earthquake pummelled by tropical storm

Criticism mounts over government’s response to disaster, which has killed more than 1,900 people

Survivors of a powerful earthquake in Haiti had more misery heaped on them overnight as Tropical Storm Grace doused them with heavy rain and hit them with high winds.

Many people have been sleeping outside in tents and makeshift shelters since the magnitude 7.2 quake struck on Saturday, killing at least 1,941 people, injuring almost 9,900 and destroying more than 37,000 houses.

“There’s flooding in some places and a lot of tents were torn down by the wind or couldn’t hold out the rain,” said Sibille Buehlmann, an aid worker for Humanity & Inclusion, an international non-government organisation.
