Biden calls on Cuban government to listen to protesters

Havana blames US sanctions after thousands demonstrate in anti-government protests

US president Joe Biden called on Cuba’s communist government to respond to protesters who staged the island’s biggest demonstrations in decades, saying they had issued a “clarion call for freedom”.

Thousands of people took to the streets in several cities across Cuba on Sunday to voice anger over shortages of food and medicine and to protest against coronavirus restrictions, in a rare manifestation of dissent in a country under one-party rule since the 1959 revolution.

Biden said in a statement on Monday that the Cuban government should give priority to meeting the people’s needs “rather than enriching themselves”.
