Trump averts government shutdown by signing Covid relief bill

US president reverses opposition to stimulus deal after unemployment benefits lapse

Donald Trump signed a bill to release $900bn in coronavirus stimulus spending on Sunday night after previously blocking a deal he had described for days as a “disgrace”.

Mr Trump’s decision to approve the bill averted a government shutdown that was set to start after midnight on Monday.

However, in a statement Mr Trump said he was signing the legislation “with a strong message that makes clear to Congress that wasteful items need to be removed”.
