London on ‘high’ alert with tighter Covid-19 curbs from Saturday

Essex, York and Chesterfield also moved to tier 2 prohibiting mixing households indoors

Londoners are to be banned from socialising with other households indoors in an effort to contain the resurgence of coronavirus in the capital, health secretary Matt Hancock announced on Thursday.

Mr Hancock told the House of Commons that London would be placed on the government’s “high” alert status involving tighter social restrictions from Saturday.

However, the government’s new three-tier alert system for tackling Covid-19 infections in England suffered a blow after talks with political leaders in Greater Manchester failed to reach an agreement on the area being put under significant economic and well as social restrictions.
