Tourism industry reeling as hopes to save summer season are dashed

Until this weekend the European tourism industry had high hopes of reclaiming at least a small portion of the crucial summer holiday season after months of lockdown.

Customer bookings had increased week-on-week as national borders began to open but on Monday hotel and travel groups faced an unexpected reality check.

Localised upticks of coronavirus cases in Spain pushed the UK government to advise against travel to the country and enforce a 14-day quarantine for any returning travellers.
