Stocks struggle higher as investors eye Covid-19 cases

Stock markets in the US and Europe struggled to make headway on Wednesday, with investors divided whether to take heart from signs of an economic recovery or fear the impact of rising Covid-19 infections.

The S&P 500 traded close to flat following three sessions of back-to-back gains, which had collectively clawed back half of last week’s losses. The tech-weighted Nasdaq rose 0.5 per cent.

In Europe the FTSE 100 closed 0.2 per cent higher, while the benchmark Stoxx 600 index rose 0.7 per cent.
