Just another morning in La Serenissima. The sunlight danced on the waterways; waste-disposal staff tugged trolleys along the fondamenta; barges trundled under the bridges.
But this was no ordinary Monday. On Sunday, coronavirus was discovered here. Cases in the Veneto region at the time of writing have reached 38, and 283 in Italy as a whole, with seven dead. Also suspended are church masses, nightclubs and public sport. Carnival’s last two days were cancelled.
