In a BBC interview on Tuesday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK under his rule intended to play “its traditional role, which is to serve as the bridge between the European powers and the United States”.
This statement skipped over the point that it was the UK’s EU membership that for decades maximised London’s importance to Washington in US-European relations.
It also ignored the way that, after Germany’s reunification in 1990, Berlin evolved into Washington’s pre-eminent partner in Europe.
