US trade deficit reaches lowest since 2016

The US goods and services trade deficit shrank in November to its narrowest since 2016 as exports climbed and imports into America fell.

The trade deficit fell 8.2 per cent to $43.1bn, its lowest since October 2016, the Commerce Department said on Tuesday. That narrowed from $46.9bn in October and was smaller than projections for $43.8bn, according to economists surveyed by Reuters.

The report showed the deficit shrank as exports climbed 0.7 per cent while imports fell 1 per cent. However economists caution that the decline in imports will probably be temporary.
