The Brexit crisis enveloping Boris Johnson intensified on Thursday when his younger brother Jo Johnson quit the government, claiming the prime minister was not governing “in the national interest”.
Jo Johnson, universities minister and a passionate Europhile, said he was stepping down as a minister and MP, adding to the sense that Boris Johnson’s hardline Brexit stance was tearing apart the Conservative party.
The resignation came as a heavy personal blow to the prime minister, who later gave a rambling speech in which he repeated his challenge to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to back his call for an October 15 general election.
