The US and Venezuelan presidents have confirmed that high-ranking officials from their respective governments are engaged in talks to resolve the Latin American country’s long-running political crisis.
Speaking at the White House on Tuesday during a meeting with his Romanian counterpart, Donald Trump said: "We're talking to various representatives of Venezuela …I don't want to say who but we are talking at a very high level."
In a televised address later, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro confirmed that “for several months there has been contact between high-ranking officials in the US government of Donald Trump and the Bolivarian government that I lead, with my explicit and direct authorisation."
