Britain and France have defied US pressure by pressing ahead with plans for a “digital tax” on big technology companies, escalating a transatlantic clash over the treatment of Apple, Facebook and Amazon.
French senators yesterday gave final approval to a unilateral tax on the turnover of some of the digital economy’s biggest names hours after the top US trade official said the measures unfairly targeted American companies.
The UK also brought forward its own proposals for a digital services tax from next April, designed to raise £400m a year by 2022.
