Israel assassinated a mid-level Hamas operative in a targeted air strike on Gaza on Sunday and warned that it had “files on many more”, as it retaliated for a weekend of rocket attacks fired into southern Israel.
The air strike incinerated a car on a busy Gaza street carrying Hamed Ahmed al-Khodary in Israel’s first targeted killing of a Hamas leader since at least 2014.
Nine Palestinians were killed in the weekend’s tit-for-tat violence, with Israel and Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, trading accusations over who was responsible for the death of a pregnant Palestinian women and her infant child. Israel blamed a Hamas rocket misfire, while Hamas blamed an Israeli air strike.
