Pakistan’s government on Saturday appointed IMF economist Reza Baqir as central bank governor to replace Tariq Bajwa, who was removed a day earlier as part of sweeping changes to the country’s economic leadership.
“The new governor will be up and running very quickly. He won’t need to go through a learning curve,” a senior finance ministry official told the FT.
Mr Baqir will take over as the government of prime minister Imran Khan is in the final stages of discussions with an IMF team in Islamabad to negotiate a new loan, considered vital to stave off a balance of payments crisis.
