EU leaders have offered the UK a Brexit extension until the end of October but with a review in June.
Theresa May, UK prime minister, was called into a meeting with Donald Tusk, the European Council president, in the early hours of Thursday to be presented with the offer. She had officially requested an extension to June 30, and Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and some other leaders were prepared to offer a much longer delay.
But Emmanuel Macron, French president, held out against any extension of more than a year, insisting that Britain provide an explanation of what it intended to to with the extra time.
