New Zealand police have arrested four people following fatal shootings at two mosques in Christchurch and confirmed that at least 49 people had been killed, in what appears to be a far-right terrorist attack.
Mike Bush, New Zealand’s police commissioner, told a press conference that there were “a number of fatalities”, with eyewitnesses reporting that the “suspects” shot multiple people in both locations. Mr Bush added that three men and one woman were in custody, with some areas of the city in lock down.
A gunman is reported to have filmed one of the mosque shootings and broadcast it live on social media. Police urged people not to share the footage and said they were working to have it removed it from the internet.
