El Salvador’s Supreme Court has temporarily halted the cancellation of a free trade agreement with Taiwan, amid rising unease in the Central American country over its ties with China.
The move comes in the wake of a landslide victory in presidential elections last month by political outsider Nayib Bukele, who is in favour of re-examining whether San Salvador should have switched diplomatic allegiance to Beijing from Taipei last year.
The court said the treaty was on hold pending further study. The suspension came after a suit by the Salvador Sugar Association, according to a statement from the court posted on Twitter.
