Aviation experts said that China’s move to ground the latest 737 aircraft was unusual, as regulators in the country that certified the original aircraft would typically take the lead.
“It’s unusual to ground an airliner. Period,” said Max Kingsley-Jones of Flight Global, an aviation magazine. “The normal procedure is for the lead certification authority, in this case the US Federal Aviation Authority, to set the guidance.”
John Strickland, director of JLS Consulting, an air transport consultancy, said: “This is unusual. We don’t know if there is a wider political angle.”
