Australian telecoms company TPG has cancelled plans to roll out the country’s fourth mobile phone network following the government’s decision to ban Huawei as a supplier of 5G technology.
The decision marks a blow to Canberra’s efforts to boost competition in the mobile sector and is among the first big commercial responses to the growing number of western countries announcing bans on Huawei 5G equipment over national security concerns.
TPG said in a statement it had decided to cease the roll out of its 4G mobile network in Australia using Huawei equipment due to the ban on Huawei, which was announced in August 2018.
