The US has vowed to pull out of a landmark Cold War nuclear arms control treaty after 60 days if Russia fails to stop longstanding alleged breaches.
Mike Pompeo, US secretary of state, said Washington would end its “self-restraint” if Moscow continued the violations, potentially leaving it open to work on developing new non-compliant weapons of its own.
The US action is the first time it has put a timeline on the withdrawal from the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, which President Donald Trump threatened in October over Russia’s alleged breaches. Moscow denies any treaty violations.
