Donald Trump issued a call for bipartisanship on Wednesday in the face of two years of battles with Democrats following their capture of House of Representatives in midterm elections that delivered a new era of divided government to the world’s largest economy.
Mr Trump said he believed there was scope for collaboration on Capitol Hill despite Tuesday’s acrimonious vote, pointing to the issues of infrastructure, trade and drug prices. “They can look at us, and we can look at them, and it will go back and forth,” the president said, adding he envisaged a “beautiful bipartisan type of situation”.
The president sued for peace at a fractious midday press conference as Democrats were preparing to sharply ramp up their scrutiny of the White House when they take control of the House in January.
