Australia is considering whether to follow the US and move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and withdraw support for the Iran nuclear deal as part of a major review of its Middle East policy.
Scott Morrison, Australia’s prime minister, said on Tuesday no final decision had been taken by the government but it was an appropriate time to consider these issues, along with whether Canberra should recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He said the review had not been prompted by representations from Washington, which moved its embassy to Jerusalem and exited the Iran nuclear deal in May.
“We think after three years after the Iran nuclear deal, it is timely to have a good look and see whether it is meeting our objectives. Is it adding to greater stability or is it not?" he said.
