Putin: Postwar peace treaty with Japan “by end of the year”

Russia and Japan should conclude a peace treaty by the end of this year, president Vladimir Putin has said, responding to demands from Japanese prime minster Shinzo Abe.

Tokyo and Moscow dispute the ownership of a group of Pacific Islands that has meant they have not formally agreed to end hostilities from the Second World War.

“An idea has just come into my head,” Mr Putin said during a panel discussion at an economic conference in Vladivostok. “Let’s conclude a peace treaty before the end of this year, without any pre-conditions,” he said to Mr Abe who was seated on the stage with him.
