Nato laid bare many of its European members’ military budget shortfalls as President Donald Trump headed towards what diplomats fear could be a tempestuous summit at the alliance’s European headquarters.
Twenty-four of Nato’s 29 members are forecast to fall below the alliance’s long-term target of spending 2 per cent of gross domestic product on defence.
The Brussels summit, which starts today, has provoked fears among European Nato countries of an even more damaging confrontation between Mr Trump and other western leaders than at last month’s G7 summit.
