Chinese authorities have arrested 245 people as part of an investigation into scrap steel smuggling ring valued at Rmb4.8bn ($750m).
The General Administration of Customs said on Wednesday it had arrested the people over illegal exports of scrap steel to South-east Asia avoiding a 40 per cent tariff on the material.
Customs officials had noticed a recent spike in exports of scrap steel sparking a nationwide investigation. China cut steel production over the winter to reduce pollution.
