A top Pyongyang official flew to New York yesterday, as the US and North Korea stepped up preparations for a summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
The visit by Kim Yong Chol, one of Kim Jong Un’s closest advisers, will be the highest level North Korean visit to the US in almost two decades. He was expected to land in New York on Tuesday afternoon on a flight from China.
Washington and Pyongyang have intensified diplomatic activity in recent days to try to salvage a June 12 summit in Singapore that would be the first meeting between a US president and a North Korean leader. Mr Trump last week abruptly called off the summit, but reversed course following a moderate response from North Korea.
