For sceptics who always doubted Kim Jong Un’s commitment to giving up his nuclear weapons, the cancellation of the North Korean leader’s summit with Donald Trump was a clear “I told you so” moment in US foreign policy.
Many North Korea experts suspected that the Trump administration was too willing to believe that Pyongyang would give up its nuclear weapons easily, and they feared that Mr Trump would be too eager to cut a deal with Mr Kim.
“Kim is clearly not going to give up his nuclear weapons,” said Vipin Narang, nuclear policy expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “It’s not a great day for the US.”
